Researchers at the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science have introduced an innovative solution to electronic waste and sustainable computing: converting discarded smartphones into miniature data centers. Globally, over 1.2 billion smartphones are manufactured each year. Their production demands significant energy and raw materials, while also generating substantial carbon emissions. Yet most phones are replaced every two to three years—often while still fully functional. Although some are recycled, many end up in landfills. Ideally, reducing this waste would involve shifting consumer habits—questioning whether each new model is truly necessary. But with technology advancing rapidly, older devices quickly lose compatibility and relevance. This creates a need for creative alternatives that extend the useful life of electronics. To address this, researchers Huber Flores, Ulrich Norbisrath, and Zhigang Yin from the University of Tartu, along with Perseverance Ngoy from the Institute of Technology and international collaborators, explored how aging smartphones could be repurposed for a completely new function. In urban settings, for instance, these data centers could be installed at bus stops to monitor real-time passenger data, helping to optimize public transit systems. The prototype was also successfully tested underwater, where it participated in marine biodiversity research. Instead of requiring a diver to collect footage manually, the device identified and counted sea species autonomously. The project demonstrates that with minimal investment and some ingenuity, aging electronics can be transformed into tools that support sustainable digital infrastructure. In a surprising twist of nature, a Category 4 hurricane that disrupted a marine expedition off the coast of Mexico ended up providing researchers with a rare scientific opportunity. With strategic planning and some fortunate timing, the team managed to sample ocean waters just after the storm passed—offering a rare glimpse into how hurricanes affect marine ecosystems. The researchers discovered that hurricanes can churn ocean waters so intensely—reaching depths of thousands of meters—that cold, nutrient-rich water is forced to the surface. This sudden upwelling triggers massive phytoplankton blooms, which can be seen from space in satellite images. These blooms fuel a cascade of life, feeding bacteria, zooplankton, small fish, and filter feeders like shellfish and baleen whales. “You could actually see and smell the difference,” said Professor Michael Beman, a marine biologist who studies microbial ecology and ocean biogeochemistry. “The ocean turned green with chlorophyll, and entirely different organisms were present, reacting intensely to the nutrient surge.” However, the same mixing that benefits surface life can also bring hidden dangers. Deep, low-oxygen zones—called oxygen minimum zones (OMZs)—can be pushed closer to the surface, endangering marine species that rely on higher oxygen levels. In 2018, Beman’s team joined researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and other partners on a research voyage from Mazatlán, Mexico, to San Diego.
